First modification:
The permit would be granted from July 1. The National Assembly, with a Sandinista majority, is expected to authorize the president’s request. The requirement is given in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Daniel Ortega, president of Nicaragua, asked the Parliament of the Central American country to ratify the entry into the national territory of troops, marine technology and aircraft of the Russian Armed Forces.
Ortega asked that the “urgent procedure” be ratified as soon as possible, so the initiative will be discussed next Tuesday and it is expected to be approved on the same day, taking into account that the Sandinistas have an absolute majority in the legislative body. .
The fundamental objective of the entry of Russian military personnel into Nicaraguan territory is to participate in operations “against illicit” on the Pacific coast and in the Caribbean Sea.
The president also authorized the arrival of a first group of Russian troops to participate in “exchanges of experiences” and training exercises with various branches of the Nicaraguan Army, as well as carry out training exercises in humanitarian aid operations.
Another group of Eurasian soldiers will take part in the “exchange of experiences and operational communication with ships and aircraft.” They will also “be trained in the confrontation and fight against drug trafficking and transnational organized crime.”
Authorized the Armed Forces of other countries and exchanges
In the same presidential decree sent to the National Assembly, Daniel Ortega authorized the entry into Nicaraguan territory of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces of Venezuela, who will carry out tasks similar to those of Russia.
For “exchanges and tasks of a humanitarian nature” the entry of military personnel from Mexico and Cuba will be allowed.
In another part of the decree, permits are granted for the entry of military personnel of the United States Armed Forces, but unlike other military groups, their presence will be “previously planned and coordinated with the Nicaraguan Army.”
Ortega also authorized the departure of a group of soldiers from his country to Russia on a rotating basis, “to participate in an exercise of exchange and military instruction and training in humanitarian aid operations” within the same time limit.
Nicaragua, along with Cuba and Venezuela, are three of Russia’s main economic and military allies in the Americas.
