The evening opens with “Aspettando PresaDiretta” which, until around 9:25 p.m., will once again address the issue of gangmastering. Attention will be drawn to the story of Satnam Singh, the Indian worker who lost first an arm and then his life in the fields of Latina. For the first time he speaks on television, hiding his identity for fear of reprisals, one of the main witnesses of that accident. From Friuli instead, an extraordinary story of redemption: in Pordenone 50 illegal foreign workers rebelled against the exploitation that had reduced them to slavery, they reported the exploiters and obtained a residence permit and the dignity of regular work. In the studio, the contradictions of an agri-food industry, which enslaves some of its workers, will be analyzed, together with sociologist Marco Omizzolo and journalist Marco Damilano, host of the program “Il cavallo e la torre”. Finally, a reflection on migration policies with PD secretary Elly Schlein.
So, “PresaDiretta” will offer an in-depth look at the disturbing arms race and the worrying war scenario that is spreading in Europe. The episode “Europa in Armi” will reflect on what is happening especially in Northern Europe through a journey around the hottest borders, where the largest NATO exercise in recent decades is underway. In Finland, Sweden, Poland, in the Baltic Sea: more than 90 thousand men mobilized for over 6 months to simulate defense from a military attack by Russia. Finland has doubled military spending, cutting healthcare, housing incentives, unemployment benefits. In Sweden, the government has halved funding for SIPRI, the prestigious Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. In the Baltic Sea, the new balance of power between NATO and Russia is being measured and a hybrid war is underway with sabotage actions against the most important infrastructures. In Poland, programs aimed at men and women are spreading to recruit more and more volunteers in the various army corps. In 2023, European states invested 550 billion euros in military spending, a record since the Cold War, and the giants of the war sector are competing for orders. Yet, the creation of a common army in Europe remains distant. In the words of the president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, interviewed by Riccardo Iacona, the indication of the path of diplomacy to reach a peace that silences the weapons.
