Cartagena and its port have been key in the great transformations of the Region as a source of knowledge and driving force for the economic and social development of the Region. For this reason, the business fabric of Cartagena, hand in hand with the Port Authority, Repsol and Sabic have signed the adhesion to the candidacy of San Javier as the headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency.
In the Old Club de Regatas, the act of support for the candidacy took place this morning, which was attended by the mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo; the president of the Port Authority, Yolanda Muñoz; the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, Juan Alemany, director of Sabic; Luis Roque, representing Repsol, as well as Ana Correa and Miguel Martínez, presidents of COEC and the Chamber of Commerce.
“Our support will mean putting all the port infrastructure at the service of the future headquarters as a project that will bring prosperity and growth for the entire Region, with innovation, digital transformation and sustainability as the main axes, keys to the development of the port,” he said. highlighted the president of the Port Authority, Yolanda Muñoz, who recalled Barlomar’s contribution as one of the most modern and sustainable terminals in the world where any operation required by the Spanish Space Agency can be carried out.
The president has insisted that “every project that involves growth and development will be in the Port of Cartagena. Mayor Noelia Arroyo, with whom we work on large industrial and port-city integration projects in Cartagena, knows this. President Fernando López Miras knows this, who has the port as an ally for the development of the Region of Murcia as the main economic engine and a benchmark within the Mediterranean arc. And he knows it, the mayor of San Javier, to promote this great project of general interest for all the inhabitants of the Region».
For his part, the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, thanked Cartagena and its companies such as COEC, Chamber of Commerce, Repsol and Sabic for “their firm commitment to a project that belongs to the Region” and assured that it is a “winning project” because it meets all the requirements. In addition, he has advanced that “in eighteen days more than 130 associations, groups, regional, national and international companies have joined a candidacy that will generate great synergies and allow important achievements to be achieved for the entire Region.”
The mayor, Noelia Arroyo, has expressed Cartagena’s support for the sister municipality of San Javier to be the headquarters of the Spanish Space Agency. A candidacy that “can have a very positive impact on the region and the region, helping to boost local and regional industry, and becoming a pole of attraction for innovative initiatives that support both the generation of employment and the promotion of ecosystems of entrepreneurship related to the space industry.
The adhesion of companies such as Repsol or Sabic will provide added value due to Repsol’s involvement in the aerospace segment through technology and sustainability with the development of new renewable fuels for rockets; de and Sabic, as one of the main petrochemical companies in the world with a presence in more than 40 countries and also closely linked to respect for the environment.
These companies join the project that already has the support of the three universities of the Region (UMU, UPTC and UCAM), the employers’ association Croem, the Union of Cooperatives of the Region of Murcia (Ucomur) and the company MTorres, a reference in the aeronautical sector.
The Agency would be located next to the General Air Academy, which would favor the relationship with the Air and Space Army, and means fulfilling one of the priorities of the call, the immediate availability of infrastructures. The Agency is scheduled to become operational in the first quarter of 2023, with a budget of €500 million and the creation of more than 70 jobs.
The Region of Murcia will face nearly a dozen contenders who have already announced their interest, such as Seville, Tres Cantos (Madrid), Huelva, Tenerife, Teruel, Puertollano (Ciudad Real), León or Cebreros, in Ávila, among others .
