The European Union (EU) plans to introduce the eighth package of sanctions against Russia, in which it intends to ban the import of certain types of steel products from the Russian Federation, but leave the possibility of importing Russian diamonds. Reported on September 28 edition Politicoafter reviewing the proposals of the European Commission (EC) on a new package of restrictions.
It is known that the sanctions will also affect certain types of steel products and certain products of the jewelry industry – precious stones and metals, with the exception of the already mentioned diamonds.
The EU also plans to ban the import of cosmetics and make-up and facial care products, pre-shave and after-shave products, soaps, deodorants, and toilet paper from Russia, explaining that these products, according to the European Commissioners, allegedly “bring significant income to Russia “.
Positions from the service sector may also be subject to restrictions. In particular, the new draft restrictions provide for a ban on “provision of architectural and engineering services, legal and information technology consultations” to Russian citizens, as well as to Russian companies or the government of the Russian Federation.
Earlier on Wednesday, it became known that the EC presented a draft of sanctions against the Russian Federation due to referendums in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. In particular, it includes a ceiling on oil prices.
As German MEP Gunnar Beck told Izvestia, the EU countries opposed to anti-Russian sanctions in the energy sector have found it more difficult to use the right of veto after the referendums, since there are now no technical or legal obstacles to set a price cap.
In turn, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at the same time compared the possible EU ban on imports of soap from Russia with the words of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in one of the letters to his first wife Josephine: here”.
The eighth package is planned to include a ban on the import of Russian products, which could deprive Moscow of €7 billion in revenue. Brussels also plans to impose restrictions on the export of technologies from the EU that can be used in the military industry.
On September 24, information appeared that, as part of the sanctions policy, the EU may ban the export of a number of goods to Russia, for example, smartphones, radar equipment and laser equipment, as well as limit the provision of IT services to Russian clients. It was also proposed to consider an embargo on the import of cash banknotes from Europe and the United States to the Russian Federation, the sale of real estate to Russians and the financing of lobbying firms or non-governmental organizations that were registered in the EU.
Western countries began to impose anti-Russian sanctions in response to Moscow’s special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. The situation in the region escalated significantly in mid-February due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
