The police have arrested the captain and first mate of the cargo ship Julietta D, which became adrift by the storm on Monday. A spokesperson for the National Police Unit confirmed this on Tuesday NRC after reporting by NH News. It is being investigated whether the two may have left the ship prematurely. A chief mate and captain are not allowed to leave a ship early, unless this is strictly necessary due to, for example, a life-threatening situation.
The two men, both Russians, are being held for questioning. After that, the case will be handed over to the public prosecutor with the North Sea portfolio, the so-called North Sea Officer. If the two did indeed leave the ship early, they may pay financially for the damage caused by a collision.

Due to the stormy weather on Monday, the anchor of the 190-meter-long bulk carrier no longer held. The Juliette D then collided with an oil tanker near IJmuiden and ran under water. Eighteen crew members had to be disembarked. Due to the severe storm and high waves, the evacuation was done by helicopter.

Meanwhile, the ship drifted southeast and hit the base of a transformer house of sorts at sea. The extent of the damage is not yet clear. The ship was towed to the port of Rotterdam only a day later, because the weather conditions did not allow it on Monday.
According to ANP news agency, the Juliette D, a German ship sailing under the Maltese flag, also had crew members from Ukraine and the Philippines on board, according to ANP news agency.
