The brand Polestar it is one of the most recent in the international automotive scene, but it is already developing significant technical solutions. The latest indiscretion concerns the possible future coupling between a new electric motor and a battery pack with an a system 800 volts. The traction system, which will be used exclusively by the Sino-Swedish brand, could make its debut in the Polestar 5 model.
The news was provided by the head of the American unit of Polestar Gregor Hembrough, according to what he writes Green Car Report. The executive explained that the electric motor, developed under the name P10, could have a power of 475 kW; as in the Porsche Taycan, the unit can be coupled to a two-speed gearbox for a choice between maximum acceleration and efficiency. The 800-volt battery, developed by the British team of Polestar in collaboration with Volvo and Lotus, it should have a capacity of 103 kWh.
According to Hembrough, the 103 kWh battery pack it should be able to be charged to 80% in “20 minutes or less” at a suitable charging station. In addition, the battery should charge bidirectionally, up to 20 kW. It must be remembered that the Swedish brand is aiming for a range of over 600 kilometers for the Polestar 5, directly challenging Porsche on every field.
Polestar is one of the best weapons of the Geely group to conquer Europe from the point of view of the electricity market. The combination between the funds and the stability of the Chinese car group and the Swedish desire to excel in safety and technology is certainly solid. On 800-volt technology, the biggest opponents are the Germans, with Porsche and Schaeffler at the forefront. But it is certainly an expanding sector: one of the biggest defects of the electric car, not so much among detractors but among users with more mileage to do, is the charging speed. And any systems that improve the situation will be welcome.
