Suspect arrested confessed to participating in the deaths of journalist and indigenist; human remains will undergo forensic examination
The PF (Federal Police) told journalists this Wednesday (June 15, 2022) that it believes that, based on the confession of suspect Amarildo da Costa Oliveira and the location he pointed out, there are “great chances” that the human remains found in Vale do Javari belong to journalist Dom Phillips and indigenist Bruno Pereira.
Amarildo confessed to having helped to hide the bodies of the journalist and the indigenist after they were murdered. The suspect, known as “Pelado”, told the PF that he knew the location of the bodies, as determined by the police. Power 360. He also said that he was not responsible for the executions, which would have been by gunshot.
According to the PF regional superintendent, Eduardo Alexandre Fontes, new arrests must still be carried out by the police.
So far, only Amarildo and his brother Oseney de Oliveira have had their arrests ordered by the courts. The PF did not disclose the names of the other suspects involved in the case.
Fontes also confirmed the information given by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anderson Torres, that the human remains that had been found at the location pointed out by Amarildo would still be analyzed by the expert.
English journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira were last seen on June 5 in Vale do Javari (AM), a region close to the border with Peru.
The PF found blood on Amarildo’s vessel. Last Friday (June 10), researchers also found “seemingly human organic material” on the Itaquaí River, in the Javari Valley.
Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, 41, was arrested in the act by the Federal Police on June 7, during an approach for possession of drugs and 762 caliber ammunition, of restricted use. He also carried hunting weapons.
