The first three days of pre-season tests, staged on the Barcelona circuit, allowed all the drivers to be able to actually test their respective cars for the first time in 2022. Moreover, unlike the last few seasons, the activity in track was very useful not only to be able to draw the first conclusions on the potential of the cars, but also and above all to be able to take measurements with the new technical-aerodynamic features, introduced by the regulation starting from this year. Among the general considerations, however, there were also some not very positive observations on a particular element: that of tire size and relative decrease in forward visibility compared to 2021.
Specifically, in fact, the tires mounted on the cars this season will have a size of 18 pcs, unlike last year’s which had a maximum size of 13 inches. To this, moreover, is added one aerodynamic component placed on the same wheels front, useful for controlling the wake generated by the car in front to be able to overtake. An element, however, which however worsens the visibility for the riders, especially when they set the curves at the entrance. Added to this is the further difficulty of the cockpit position, which has remained unchanged compared to the previous championship.
Regarding this specific problem, Sergio Perez expressed his point of view, underlining how this difficulty can be overcome by extending the activity on the track: βIt’s a matter of time – explained the Mexican from Red Bull in a statement reported by gpfans.com – we definitely have to get used to less visibility. We will all try to adapt more and more, but obviously it will be essential to find the correct position on the seat, making sure that this is perfected. It will be another challenge for us this year β.
