The United States Grand Prix gave Formula 1 fans yet another duel for victory between this year’s two title contenders: Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. In the end, thanks to a very careful tire management and a rather aggressive team strategy, it was the Dutchman from Red Bull who prevailed. Even behind the two rivals for the world crown, however, there was no lack of battles on the track, even rather harsh. The contact at the first corner between Latifi and Stroll, the three-way challenge between the two McLarens and Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari and the tough battles between Fernando Alonso and the two Alfa Romeos gave a lot of work to do for the Race Direction.
In the end though the stewards did not impose any penalties, neither during the Grand Prix nor at the end of it. However, there was no lack of controversy, especially from Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard and Alpine have complained a lot, via radio and in post-race interviews, especially about the battle between the Asturian and Kimi Raikkonen, with the latter accused by the two-time world champion of having taken advantage of having gone out from the limits of the track in curve 1. On several occasions the ‘referees’ of this world championship round have however resolved the disputes by imposing a exchange of position, as happened for example in the case of the three-man challenge of the first laps between Sainz, Norris and Ricciardo.
At a disciplinary level, nothing changes in the ranking of penalty points, with Lando Norris who is currently the driver closest to a possible disqualification, with eight penalty points on the license collected in 12 months. He can smile instead Lance Stroll, which was paired with McLaren’s English. The Aston Martin standard bearer has in fact seen three penalty points that had been inflicted on him last year over the weekend in Portimao expire in recent days. Now the Canadian has dropped to a less ‘dangerous’ level of five points. The two title rivals, Verstappen and Hamilton, are still at two penalty points.
