A large investigation warns parents against video games.
In a large survey called “Sold to Minors“, the Moige (Movimento Italiano Paritori) showed how one in two traders sells products that are prohibited to children under the age of 18. Among these, in addition to alcohol, smoking and scratch cards, we also find video games classified PEGI 18.
It must be said that the PEGI 18 evaluation is precisely an evaluation and video games are not strictly forbidden to minors. It goes without saying that to remedy this “problem” it is the parents themselves who have to take an interest in the pastimes of their children, perhaps choosing together which video games are most suitable for minors. In any case, the Moige has drawn up a series of infographics on all the products prohibited to minors that you can view clicking here.
“Products such as alcohol, tobacco, gambling, pornography, 18+ video games and cannabis light are still too accessible to minors. To say this are the data of the ‘Sold to Minors’ survey, carried out by MOIGE – Movimento Italiano Paritori, in collaboration with the Piepoli institute, conducted on a panel of over 1,000 minors aged 10 to 17, interviewed throughout Italy“reads the press release.
“The data confirm a rather widespread sale of banned products among minors in Italy, despite the prohibitions of the law. The spread is certainly linked to the ease with which they manage to access it, with more than half of the merchants who do not verify the age of those who buy, and sell without problems even to buyers clearly below the permitted age.“.
“Minors cannot be subjected to commercial abuse damaging to their health by adults. The survey reveals some worrying data“comments Antonio Affinita, General Manager of MOIGE.”There are no justifications for the sale to minors of products that are harmful to their health: it is not acceptable that there are traders who sell banned products without verifying their age and against the regulations in force for their protection. Equally serious is the regulatory vacuum regarding cannabis light and video games classified by Pegi as +18: for both products there are no rules and penalties for those who sell to minors. Legislative action is urgently needed. We hope that the production chains of these products work harder for their social sustainability, so that they are truly accessible only to adult customers. As parents we will immediately turn to Parliament and the Government to activate more stringent and rigorous rules, sanctions and controls, in order to protect the psycho-physical well-being of minors, preventing them from adopting deviant behavior or developing addictions.“.
