Once upon a time there were the great European auto shows, with the car brands of the Old Continent ready to showcase their main novelties while today the Motor Shows are showcase for the Chinese electric. It may seem like the opening words of a tale of a faded past, yet it is the perfect photograph of what is happening at the Paris Motor Show 2022. Now in its 89th edition, the Mondial de l’Auto it has never been so lean, with only Stellantis (present with Jeep, DS and Peugeot) and Renault among the big names in the continental automotive sector while the flip side shows how Asian brands have conquered the scene.
From Great Wall to BYD, passing through Seres, the French event was an opportunity to launch the assault on the European market with their respective electric or electrified models. Starting with GMW for example, which has re-proposed Wey, the brand that first with the Coffee 01 and in the future with the Coffee 02 will aim to conquer a slice of share from the point of view of registrations with two plug-in hybrid models with a premium breath. Alongside technology there is also the attempt to offer a refined design that can adapt to the needs of European customers but above all an autonomy of up to 147 km in electric mode which represents a first in the category. Wey Coffee 01 will arrive on the road in 2023, first in Germany with a price list starting from 55,900 euros. Great Wall then doubled with the full electric Ora brand, thanks to the Funky Cat which has already obtained the 5 Euro NCAP stars and will boast 310 km of autonomy on a single charge. Alongside the standard version, there will also be a GT variant and the Next Ora Cat capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds.
BYD, on the other hand, begins its race on the Old Continent market with three models, the Act 3 crossover which will be ordered in Germany at a price of 38,000 euros, the sports sedan Han e the Tang 7-seater SUV which instead will be available starting from 72,000 euros. Atto 3 will be equipped with a 60.48 kWh battery for a range of 420 kilometers and a 204 hp powertrain. BYD Han boasts fine finishes and an elegant design, equipped with a powertrain with two electric motors that generate a total power of 380 kW or 523 hp combined with all-wheel drive, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.9 seconds and a range of 521 km in the combined WLTP cycle. The Tang, on the other hand, was launched in Norway as early as 2021, quickly becoming the second best-selling full electric model in the country. At the Paris Motor Show the BYD Seal also debuted, a sports sedan that aims to unseat the Tesla Model 3. Currently marketed in China with a range of up to 700 km, it has a price of about 30,000 euros and could arrive in Europe as early as half. 2023. Space then to the Mondial de l’Auto also for Seres, which participates in the 2022 Paris Motor Show with Seres 3 and Seres 5, two electric SUVs also available in a range extender version (only the Seres 5). The brand that collaborates with Huawei is distributed in Italy by the Koelliker group.
A Chinese invasion therefore that begins to seriously worry even the CEOs of European companies and institutions. From Carlos Tavares to Luca de Meo, passing through President Emmanuel Macron, all ready to spend words to spur Europe to defend itself from an industrial point of view from Asian dominance. We will see if the appeals and what was seen at the French event will push for targeted actions.
