SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The average condition of the wheat crop in Paraná has worsened after the occurrence of frosts in the last week, especially in areas of the southwest of the state, the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) reported on Tuesday.
Now the government agency estimates that 80% of the areas are in good condition, seven points below the previous week. 17% of the plantations now have a situation assessed as “average” (compared to 11%), while 3% are “bad”.
Deral technicians already anticipated a worsening in crop conditions due to frosts, although total production, maintained at the current situation, should increase compared to the previous season – when the weather was more severe – in a preliminary assessment.
Frost damage takes a few days to become clearer in the fields.
Deral also reported that producers harvested 2% of the state’s wheat area, after last week’s report marked the beginning of work with 1%.
At the same time last year there was still no percentage of wheat harvested in the department report. Paraná already has 18% of wheat in the maturation phase, close to harvest.
The harvest of the second corn crop reached 84% of the area of Paraná, an increase of five percentage points compared to the previous week.
