Initial results of the preparatory test for the 2022 Census, carried out on Ilha de Paquetá (RJ), reveal that this neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro has a population of 3,612 inhabitants, with 1,935 women (53.6%) and 1,677 men (46.4%). About 12.8% of the local population were children under 14 years of age and 31.6% were elderly aged 60 years or over.
Preliminary data were released today (16), by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). They reveal that 23.1% of the island’s population are 65 years of age or older, 16.9% are under 18 and 85.4% are potential voters, that is, they are 16 years of age or older. The informations were collected by IBGE census takers from the 6th to the 24th of September.
With an area of 1,216 square kilometers (km²) and a demographic density of 2,970 inhabitants per km², Paquetá was chosen to carry out the 2022 Census test because more than 85% of its population was already immunized with two doses of the vaccine against covid-19 . The proximity to the IBGE headquarters also contributed to the reduction of the test’s operating costs, according to the institute. 16 IBGE civil servants participated in the work, 12 of which were census takers.
Households
2,774 units were visited in Paquetá, of which 1,552 were permanent private homes. In 1,494 households (96.3%), the interview was in person; in 14 (0.9%), it was done by telephone; in another 14 (0.9%), it was done via the internet. Although IBGE makes it possible to collect data through interviews online since 2007, the majority of the population has been in favor of face-to-face interviews.
The Census reveals that of the registered occupied households, 98% had an interview carried out. In only 2% it was not possible to carry out the interview, due to difficulties in finding the informants (0.77%) or due to explicit refusals (1.16%). Of the 2,774 addresses visited during the test, 56% were Occupied Permanent Private Households, 24% Permanent Private Households for Occasional Use, 14% were Vacant Permanent Private Households and 6% were Establishments.
The average number of residents per household is 2.37. The data also reveal that 38.5% of households have two or more bathrooms for exclusive use. The average income of heads of households in Paquetá is R$ 3,613.47. IBGE found, however, that half of those responsible have an average monthly income equal to or less than R$2.3 thousand.
In addition to interviewing residents, the IBGE surveyed the conditions surrounding the homes. It was found that 93.5% have access to the general water distribution network; 70.8% of households are on streets with the presence of storm drains for rainwater drainage; 84.9% are located on roads with capacity for cargo transport vehicles; 89.2% are on streets with sidewalks; and 72.8% are on tree-lined streets. Ten thematic maps of Paquetá were also produced by IBGE.
