What happened in that maintenance operation is a tragedy for everyone, a common pain. Yet another white death and yet another anger at funerals.
It’s time to say goodbye to the so-called white deaths of Casteldaccia. Certainly not to forget those who died in the line of duty, and today was a very hard day. At the funeral of Ignazio Giordanoone of the victims of the recent workplace tragedy in the Palermo area, there were many tears of emotion but also of anger.
The ceremony took place in the mother church of Partinico. Giordano’s wife, together with her three sons, Fabrizio, Davide and Gaspare, sat in the front row, followed by authorities, friends and acquaintances. This event affected everyone, not just the community around the workers involved in the sad event. Even those who had never met Giordano’s gaze were moved.
What happened in that maintenance job is a tragedy for everyone, a common pain, for having been able to lose, again, people in the workplace, Giordano specifically at just 59 years old. The eldest of his sons remembered his father as a hero, “He gave his life to try to save his colleagues in difficulty. He died a hero.”
During the ceremony, presided over by the archbishop of Monreale, Gualtiero Isacchi, criticisms towards the harsh reality of the world of work in Italy, underlining the persistence of unrelated deaths. Isacchi described these tragedies as a defeat for society, underlining the need to address this emergency.
The way in which Ignazio left his dearest loved ones, the way in which he lost his life, is profoundly unfair. Dying at work is a worrying sign that speaks of a fragile society, in which there is no work for everyone and when there is, it is often not dignified, it is underpaid, it is not respectful of human dignity; it is a job that forgets the person and has as its only horizon their objectives and earnings.
Also Epifanio Alsace, partner and co-owner of the Quadrifoglio Group, was remembered by his loved ones in another funeral ceremony. Alsace, the first to descend into the plant and the first victim, was remembered as a great worker who never abandoned his workers despite his 71 years of age.
The funeral service was presided over by Don Enzo Santoro, parish priest of the Sacred Heart church, and saw the participation of top provincial and regional leaders of the Carabinieri, considering that the victim’s son is in service with the Partinico company. Also here, very harsh words who state that “you can’t die of work to bring a piece of bread home”.
The mayors of Alcamo and Castellammare del Golfo also participated in the ceremony. The funeral services of the other victims will be celebrated in the coming days. Giuseppe Miraglia will be commemorated on Saturday in the mother church of San Cipirello, while Roberto Ranieri he will receive his final farewell on Monday in Alcamo. The funeral of Giuseppe La Barbera they will always be held on Monday in the Carmine Maggiore church in Palermo. Meanwhile, the conditions of Domenico Viola, saved from the accident, improve, but a high risk of potentially lethal complications remains.
