After two days of hard work here are the names: Louisa Staples (UK), Olga Artyugina (Russia), Ava Bahari (Sweden), Lara Boschkor (Germany), Giuseppe Gibboni (Italy) and the very young – born in 2005 – Nurie Chung (South Korea). They will be the ones to try their hand at the finals of the 56th edition of the Paganini Prize, the prestigious international competition that this year – as in 2018 – takes place under the artistic direction of Giuseppe Acquaviva.
The last Italian to win the Paganini, it should be remembered, was Giovanni Angeleri back in 1997. Never many women in a single edition, a sign of the times, even if since 2000 female participation in the competition has been growing. But let’s get back to today. Among these six talents is the winner. To choose it there are the final tests, scheduled at the Carlo Felice, Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 starting at 15. Violinists will have to prove their talent by playing a concert for violin and orchestra of their choice between Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius and Tchaikowsky.
All six, on the other hand, will have to challenge the genius Paganini by playing his Concerto no. 1 op. 6, MS 21 in D major. It is a demanding test but the level of the competitors is high. On the podium the conductor Sergej Krylov who will conduct the Carlo Felice orchestra, also president of the jury of the Prize. Fifteen violinists had arrived at the semifinals, between 16 and 30 years old, engaged in the execution of music by Brahms and Paganini, as well as a contemporary piece specially commissioned to Carlo Boccadoro and a virtuoso work chosen by the competitor, among various nineteenth-century authors. and of the first Nocevento.
