Another tragedy in the mountains. The trail of victims on the snow is getting longer and longer. The last to lose their lives were two hikers: a 33-year-old woman, originally from Lithuania, and a 51-year-old man, originally from Veneto. They were overwhelmed and killed by an avalanche on Sasso Nero, in Valle Aurina, in South Tyrol. The two lifeless bodies were recovered this morning by the men of the Bergrettung, the South Tyrolean German-speaking mountain rescue service, but since yesterday their traces had been lost.
The man and the woman were two snowshoe hikers and lived in Cavallino Tre Porti, near Venice. In that area yesterday the avalanche bulletin indicated a danger level of 3 on a scale from 1 to 5. As we learn from the rescuers, the two bodies were found at about 1,700 meters in the Trippachtal above the village of San Giovanni in Valle Aurine.
“We started the search operations this morning at 8.45 am after the alarm raised by the owner of the bed & breakfast where they were staying, after the same, not having seen the two guests return yesterday evening, first went personally to look for them – told AGI, Robert Tasser, head of the Bergrettung of Valle Aurina -. Then he raised the alarm, but it was, by now, too late. The emergency medic was flown up by Pelikan 2 helicopter. We located the cell phone and set off with teams of ski mountaineers and snowmobiles. One body was under the snow and the other on the snow mass.’
Arma dei Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza are also involved in the operations. Also yesterday, and still in Valle Aurina, a 51-year-old South Tyrolean hiker was fortunately saved after being swept away by an avalanche for about 180 meters. The woman, who was proceeding alone, managed to partially free herself and call for help who found her with her head and an arm protruding from the snow mass.
