Today they are busy planting trees in the Municipality of Meda (Monza-Brianza), to create a real wood of 500 new plantsthe employees of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Italy Srl, a Japanese pharmaceutical company based in Milan. A contribution for this territory and its inhabitants, which represents the concrete integration of the ‘carbon neutrality’ path started by the company, which communicates it in a note announcing that, with the same goal, it also supports another project, of wind energy, in Tamil Nadu, India.
“I instantly embraced this idea which reflects the ethical sense and social responsibility that characterizes our company philosophy and our commitment to environmental sustainability. In fact, I believe that companies, more and more, are called to respond and give their contribution to the environmental cause that affects us all closely.. We have therefore embarked on this path that will lead us to the certification of ‘carbon neutrality‘not only thanks to today’s initiative, but also to another important international project ”, he declares Alessandro Lattuada, CEO of Otsuka Italia. The decarbonisation process envisages the synergistic action of reducing company greenhouse gas emissions and offsetting the residual ones – so-called offsetting – towards the objectives of ‘carbon neutrality’. The pharmaceutical company therefore decided to offset its CO2 emissions by financing certified international projects to combat climate change, but also to plant trees on the local territory to leave a positive trace on national soil.
The project – reads the note – began with a process of assessing the company’s carbon footprint, that is the total company greenhouse gas emissions, carried out according to international standards and then validated by a certification body (Icmq). Subsequently, actions were activated to reduce emissions and compensate for residual emissions through the cancellation of carbon credits generated by a certified renewable energy project in India and tree planting in Meda, precisely what the municipality of Brianza protagonist of this initiative.
The year in which the climate impact was assessed is 2019, not yet conditioned by the containment measures of the Covid-19 pandemic, such as smartworking and the reduction of production activities. “It would have been easier to refer to the year 2020 or 2021 – adds Lattuada – but we wanted to create a photograph as real as possible of our situation in terms of greenhouse gas emissions in order to better evaluate the interventions to be implemented for their removal: a commitment that, of course, we intend to continue to undertake also in the future “.
This set of activities was carried out together with Inrete Green, a benefit agency specializing in sustainability projects and Rete Clima, which promotes sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility, the Foresta Italia campaign, which includes this forest intervention, is sponsored by the Ministry of Transition. ecological and by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.
To achieve the goal of improving the territory and the quality of life of those who live there, a partnership between public and private is essential. A strong territorial alliance between companies, citizens and institutions is therefore needed. “We welcome this initiative which, in collaboration with the private sector, enhances the public green area of our city. It fits in well with the attention shown over the years in this direction by our administration and our city fabric ”, he says Luca Santambrogio, mayor of Meda and president of the province MB. In addition to the Meda initiative, a second project is planned in India in the state of Tamil Nadu where wind power plants capable of generating clean energy will be installed. This operation will lead to a reduction of emissions and accessible and clean energy of 9,989 Mwh every year. In addition, a customized training program is planned for plant engineers and operators that will strengthen their skills in developing the low-carbon supply chain.
