A rumor suggests that several companies are considering exiting the foldable device sector, despite an expanding market.
While many companies are enjoying success in the foldable device market, a new rumor suggests that this trend may soon come to an end.
A report from Hankyung.com indicates that OPPO and VIVO have reportedly decided to abandon the foldable phone marketand there is a possibility that OnePlus could follow them in this choice.
If that happened, most of the market share would go away in the hands of Samsung and Huaweiwith the rest to be shared by Honor, Motorola, Xiaomi and, in the near future, also Apple.
Uncertain voice
Oppo entered the foldable phone market in 2021, while VIVO launched its first such smartphone in 2022.
Although some have been limited to the Chinese market, both brands have continued to launch new models in recent years.
The report indicates that the possible decision of the two companies to exit the foldable phone market could be due to a significant decline in their market share in this segment last year.
In October, Oppo presented the third generation of the Find N3foldable book style, e Find N3 Flipclamshell or “clamshell” style.
VIVO has reached the second generation of X Fold and X Flip.
A new leaflet launch by VIVO is expected in April and, generally speaking, at the moment, there is no official statement by the two companies regarding a potential exit from the market.
It is advisable to wait for further reports to understand how the situation will develop.
Leaving while running
The foldable device market continues to grow and there is an urgent need to maintain the active competition.
Huawei for example, is working on what could be a 10-inch foldable smartphone or tablet, a model triple foldingwith the possibility of launching as early as June this year.
However, given the circumstances involving Huawei, it may not be released in all international markets.
At the same time Samsung, which holds a market share of 66 percent in 2023 for the segment, appears to be working on a phone with rollable screen and potentially even on a tri-foldable similar to Huawei's.
In the meantime, there are rumors that Apple is developing its first foldable phone, not without some unexpected events along the way.
Despite the content of the indiscretion, it would make little sense to abandon the market at this time, especially as regards OnePlus, considering that many reviewers have judged OnePlus Open to be one of the best folding phones ever.
