The brand Opel continues to be an important outpost of the Stellantis group as regards the safety. The German cars aim to improve performance in this area, also in light of one city mobility which has been modernizing itself towards different forms of displacement. In particular, scooters and electric bicycles populate our streets more, with the possibility of seeing increased cases of misunderstanding.
“The new frontier of car safety has to deal with emerging phenomena concerning road traffic. In particular, the extreme diffusion of electric scooters and the success of home delivery of food, thanks to riders on bicycles, open an unprecedented front. Both of these elements are the result of rising phenomena that the motorist has to live with, despite him. The pitfalls are linked to the poor visibility of scooters and bicyclesespecially after dark, in addition to reckless behavior of some of these new protagonists of urban circulation“Writes Opel. But what does the brand put in place to manage the situation?
It starts from automatic emergency braking, present on all models in the range: it consists of a front camera and constantly monitors what happens while driving. The information is shared with other systems, also producing autonomous actions, with braking automatically reducing speed if it detects a fast approach without reaction from the driver, even coming to a complete stop of the car or mitigating the effects of a possible impact. Even with the compact Opel Corsa, the system works at speeds of up to 50 km / h, and its detection capability covers cars, pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles, day and night.
The two sides of the car are also under observation, thanks to theside blind spot alert: uses ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers, to signal the presence of obstacles on both sides, or behind the car. In the rear area, the panoramic camera of the optional Parking Pack, with which visibility reaches 180 °, provides fundamental safety in parking maneuvers or when exiting the stall in reverse, when the visibility of passing traffic from the driver’s seat is very limited.
As darkness falls, the headlights come into play Intelli-Lux LED Pixel, with 168 LED elements that follow the movement of the car from the front, without dazzling other vehicles. Opel Grandland adds to this the system Night Vision, thanks to which people or animals are detected (even in complete darkness) up to 100 meters in front of the car. At the base of Night Vision there are technologies of military origin, which are expressed through an infrared camera positioned in the center of the grille. The detection produces an alert screen on the digital display of the instrumentation, showing live images, with the person (or animal) highlighted chromatically, so as to be clearly distinct from the surrounding environment.
