Opel it is becoming a purely electric brand, aiming to complete the transition in record time. By 2028, the Rüsselsheim-based carmaker will convert all products in its range into 100% electric models. Opel already offers a complete selection of electrified models, with 12 cars available on the list, from the small Rocks-e to the Movano-e van. Another battery electric model will be introduced by the middle of this decade with the new generation of the Opel Manta. The successors of Opel Crossland and Opel Insignia will also be electric-only. All Opel cars will aim for a range of between 500 and 800 kilometers and a fast charging capacity of at least 32 kilometers per minute.
“Opel is following a consistent path to full electrification and is proceeding in record time. We are therefore making a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. And we will not stop at the conversion of our range: together with our partners, we will independently produce high-performance batteries in Kaiserslautern as early as 2025. In addition, a new, resource-saving campus is under construction at our headquarters in Rüsselsheim.“, Said Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz, explaining the strategy of the brand.
Currently the Opel Combo-e, Vivaro-e and Movano-e models have a battery power system, while the Vivaro-e Hydrogen offers a variant with fuel cell technology. As for passenger cars, the battery-powered variants of the Opel Corsa-e and Mokka-e already account for more than 25% of all sales in Germany. The new Opel Grandland and the new generation Opel Astra are both available with plug-in hybrid engines. Next year the battery-powered Opel Astra-e will arrive, in a five-door and Sports Tourer version. All this in the tradition of Opel Ampera, a pioneer for the Blitz brand: in 2012 this coupé-inspired four-seater, equipped with a so-called range extender, had an externally charged battery; in 2016 the full electric range was launched with Ampera-e, with good market success in the Netherlands and Norway.
