Russia’s head of state Vladimir Putin does not want to personally travel to Rome for the G20 summit at the end of October.
Moscow – The Kremlin announced in Moscow on Tuesday that he was willing to take part by video. The President had phoned the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. The Kremlin had previously made Putin’s personal participation dependent on the corona situation. The official statistics for Russia on Tuesday showed 1,015 corona deaths within one day, as many deaths as never before.
This will not lead to another face-to-face meeting with US President Joe Biden. The two heads of state met personally for the first time in Geneva in the summer. The relationship between Moscow and Washington is tense because of a large number of conflicts and sanctions than it has been for decades. It is expected that China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping will also stay away from the summit of the major industrialized countries (G20) on October 30th and 31st in Italy – also because of the corona situation.
Putin had recently left it open whether he would travel to the world climate summit COP26 in Glasgow from October 31 to November 12 in person or whether he would just connect by video. Last week in Moscow, he recalled that there had recently been a large number of corona cases in his vicinity, which is why he was also in quarantine. (dpa)
