It seems that apps like Discord and video games are used for very different purposes.
Someone probably won’t be so surprised by this news, given the variety of users you can meet online, but this study seems interesting at least. All this comes from a report published by the British Home Office, regarding a Prevent, an anti-extremism program.
The numbers are quite worrying and perhaps greater than one would expect: the reports bring the figure at risk of radicalization to about 46%, a number on which the various online interactions appear to intervene during a gaming session. As reported by the Guardian, in fact, according to the coordinator of Prevent Sean Arbuthnot, most of the reports would come from apps dedicated to gaming, such as Discord. Among the many things that run in the chats, there is that Covid is a hoax or that there is a claim that whites become a minority in the UK.
“If you interact with them on a YouTube platform and scroll through the comments section, you may find links to more encrypted chat rooms or far-right codes or signs and symbols that you may be tempted to search for.“said Arbuthnot. This is one of the troubling ways right-wing extremists can exploit fears stemming from Covid-19 and conspiracies, to essentially lure vulnerable young people into the online space.“.
Even in Italy the situation is not the best, so it is important to report those who discriminate or bring arguments of a violent nature.
