The former chief sanitary doctor of Russia, Gennady Onishchenko, positively assessed the proposal of the Ministry of Education to extend the vacation week to ten days, calling such an initiative a return to the traditions of school holidays in the USSR. He added that if the situation with COVID-19 deteriorates, then, in his opinion, children will have to be transferred to distance learning. He told about this to “Lente.ru”.
Holidays will be announced in all schools in Russia from October 30 to November 7 inclusive. The Ministry of Education said that the department is preparing a document according to which schools are recommended to declare vacations. They need to be added to the vacation days that are on schedule. Also, during non-working days, duty groups are organized in kindergartens and nurseries.
Onishchenko recalled that the holidays in the Soviet Union were much longer than now. “When I was at school, I remember very well that the first quarter ended on October 25 and the holidays lasted until November 10, ending on Police Day. This is exactly the period that is needed, it has been worked out by more than one generation of both teachers and students. This changed ten years ago. We gave school principals the right to decide for themselves when to let their children go on vacation, ”he said.
Onishchenko welcomed the decision of the Ministry of Education and said that in the current situation it looks logical. “What is recommended by the Ministry of Education today is a natural course of events. The school has always been a vulnerable place, given that we collect all 17 million children in 56 thousand buildings, and nine months of the year they are there most of the day, from five to 12 hours, in classes of 50 square meters they sit for 20-30 , and sometimes 40 people. That is, this is the place where there is an active pro-epidemic, not only by the “corona”, but also by the flu and so on. Such a recollection of the Ministry of Education of the good old past, when there were holidays at that time, turned out to be very useful, “added the former chief sanitary doctor of Russia.
According to Onishchenko, in the future, school principals will have to decide on their own when to send children back to class. He advised them to focus on the epidemic situation. “If Moscow needs it before 10 [ноября] to extend, judging by the current incidence, and somewhere in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, there can be and earlier. Yes, even within the same area, you can do it in different ways. In the same Krasnoyarsk now the situation is different from any village in the region. It was done correctly and reasonably, “Onishchenko stressed.
He stated that in this matter there should be synergy between educational and medical processes. Onishchenko stressed that children should not be relaxed in any case. In case the epidemic situation continues to worsen, the country’s former sanitary doctor suggested transferring children to distance learning.
On October 19, Tatyana Golikova proposed to introduce non-working days from October 30 to November 7. Russian President Vladimir Putin supported her proposal and said that now it is especially important “to bring down the peak of the new wave of the epidemic.” He also instructed the heads of the regions where the high incidence of COVID-19 is recorded, to assess the situation and introduce non-working days a week earlier – starting from October 23rd.
The head of state noted that, if necessary, the non-working day regime could be extended after November 7. He urged to keep wages and stressed that the government should support business in connection with the imposed restrictions.
