A group of more than 50 amateur fishermen, including women, ended up on an ice floe that had broken off from the shore near the village of Starodubskoye, Sakhalin Region. Rescuers managed to rescue 25 people, the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation reported on Friday, February 25.
“One and a half kilometers from the coast, an ice field broke off. As a result, a crack 5-6 meters wide was formed along the coast, behind which there are amateur fishermen,” the source said. Ministry of Emergency Situations.
About the incident near the village of Starodubskoye, Dolinsky district, rescuers were informed at about 13:34 (5:34 Moscow time). From Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, eight people left to help the fishermen on vehicles, including the Khivus rescue hovercraft and the Favorit boat.
So far, 25 people have been brought ashore by boat. The rescue operation continues.
“On February 25, in Mordvinov Bay and other parts of the southeastern coast of Sakhalin, under the influence of squeezing wind, when cracks appear, an unstable part of the fast ice is possible to separate … Access to the ice is dangerous,” rescuers cite a warning from the Sakhalin Department of Roshydrometeorological Center.
On January 15, eight fishermen and two cars set off to drift on an ice floe that broke away near the village of Balagannoye in the Magadan Region. An eyewitness said that the ice floe broke off in just a minute, not giving people time to save. Eight people with Nissan Safari and Land Cruiser Prado jeeps began to move away in front of our eyes towards the open sea.
