“So far the Omicron variant” of Sars-CoV-2 “has been transmitted mainly among adults between 20 and 30 years, initially spreading in large cities and in clusters linked to social and work meetings”. This was explained by Hans Kluge, director of the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for Europe, in a statement released today in which he takes stock of the new pandemic coronavirus mutant and its symptoms.
“We do not yet know if Omicron causes a more serious disease than the Delta variant”, he specifies, however highlighting that, “based on the first cases of Omicron reported to WHO Europe, 89% of infected people reported common symptoms of Covid- 19: cough, sore throat, fever “.
However, Kluge is keen to underline a positive note: “The first tests – he confirms – support the hypothesis that anti-Covid vaccines continue to do their job” against severe forms of disease “and save lives”.
