The Public Prosecution Service of Amsterdam continues soccer player Quincy Promes for attempted manslaughter. That was announced on Thursday. Promes is suspected of stabbing his cousin during a family party, which took place in Abcoude at the end of July 2020. The nephew suffered a knee injury.
Family members only reported the 29-year-old footballer a few months after the party. On December 13, 2020, the police arrested him. He was released after two days. In July of this year, the Public Prosecution Service decided to prosecute after studying the criminal file. It now appears that Promes is suspected of attempted murder. If he is acquitted of this, the judge can also sentence him for aggravated assault. Promes has so far denied involvement in the stabbing incident.
The trial against Promes will probably start at the beginning of 2022, an exact hearing date is not yet known. At the time of the incident, 29-year-old Promes was playing for Ajax. He transferred in the winter break of 2021 for an amount of 8.5 million euros to Spartak Moscow, where he still plays football. Last summer, Promes was included in the European Championship selection of the Dutch national team by ex-national coach Frank de Boer. The current national coach Louis van Gaal has not called him up to date because of his lingering criminal case.
Spartak Moscow
In an interview with the Russian football site Championat Spartak director Yevgeni Meleshikov said in March that agreements have been made with Ajax when purchasing Promes, so that the Russians do not run any financial and legal risk in the event of a possible conviction. Spartak could in that case break the contract with Promes and stop the six-monthly deposits to Ajax. However, Ajax would not have to repay the amounts already received. A spokesperson for Ajax did not want to comment on the existence of the clauses on Thursday.
