Paper straws soften after use. If children suck on it, parts of the straw can come off and create a paper wad that is difficult to swallow. The NVWA wants to use the study to gain a better picture of the risks. The regulator also advises that children under three years only use a paper straw under supervision.
Since last summer, the European Union has banned disposable plastic items, such as straws. Since then, paper straws have been used, for example, in the catering industry. Cups made of EPS foam (a type of styrofoam) have also been banned from the market since July last year, as well as plastic spoons. The measures are intended to reduce single-use plastic and litter.
