The Formula 1 calendar of 2023 will have no fewer than six sprint races, which is a doubling.
Sprint sessions were introduced in the top class not too long ago, namely in 2021. It turned out to be a good move! Because it’s a popular addition to the usual weekend format, with qualifying shifted to Friday and there’s an extra 100km race on Saturday. World Cup points can be earned in this and the starting grid for the main race on Sunday is determined in the sprint race.
Formula 1 sprint races
The plans have now been approved that will ensure that there will be more sprint races in the Formula 1 season of 2023. So this will be six, while there were three. Good mathematicians will tell you that this is a doubling. This year the sessions will take place at Imola and Spielberg, followed by another one at Interlagos in Brazil in November. It has not been announced where the other sprint sessions will take place in 2023. Perhaps this could be Zandvoort. The circuit was already on the list of potential locations before.
Yesterday the World Motor Sport Council announced this and apparently the FIA has now also agreed. At first she was difficult about this, presumably because she wanted to see more money. It is not clear whether this is the case. Earlier, the ten Formula 1 teams and the management of motorsport had already agreed.
Well, there is now a deal. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has since confirmed it, saying it is another example of continued growth and prosperity at the highest levels of motorsport.
spectacle
The sprint races in Formula 1 have proven themselves last season and made the event more exciting. The Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali is of course enthusiastic and says the following:
It builds on the success of the new format first introduced in 2021
Let’s just hope that the races do indeed bring the spectacle that Domenicali is talking about. Sometimes the sprint races can feel a bit boring. Especially on circuits with few overtaking opportunities. It is then a train that goes to the finish without pit stops. More sprint races, okay. But with the necessary dose of spectacle please!
