Due to storm Eunice, fewer trains will run tomorrow morning, and all train traffic will be stopped from 2 p.m. The NS has just decided that ‘with a view to the safety of our travelers and colleagues’. The KNMI has issued code orange from tomorrow afternoon due to the storm.
“The weather bureau for the rail sector has warned NS and ProRail about code orange,” the NS said in a statement. ‘Extremely strong winds are expected throughout the country, which could cause dangerous situations. Just like on the road and in aviation, this has an impact on the rail. That is why a storm timetable will be in effect tomorrow morning and fewer trains will be running.’
From 2 p.m. no trains run at all. ‘There is a good chance that trees will blow onto the track’, says the NS. ‘It is also too dangerous for emergency teams to provide assistance or carry out repair work during such a severe storm. We find it very annoying that travelers are inconvenienced by this.’
The NS advises people who still want to take the train on Friday to keep an eye on the NS Travel Planner.
Exceptional
The fact that the NS decided not to run any trains at all due to the storm happened last in 2018. “This is a truly exceptional situation,” said spokesperson Anne van der Wel.
The NS cannot yet predict when train traffic can resume. “In any case, there will be no trains running on Friday evening and night. We have to wait for the storm to pass. Then we can see how the track is and what repair work is needed,” said the spokesperson. “As soon as we can resume the timetable, we will of course report this immediately on our site and other communication channels.”
Arriva
Arriva trains in Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel and Limburg will no longer run tomorrow from 2 p.m. “We can only drive again when all routes are safe again and if ProRail allows this. We do not expect to be able to drive again before Friday evening.”
Arriva’s regular buses do run ‘for the time being’. “As long as the situation is safe. Keep an eye on media coverage, on Arriva’s website and social media for up-to-date information,” the company said.
Trams and metros
It is not yet known whether trams and metros will be running in the major cities tomorrow afternoon. GVB, the public transport company in Amsterdam, will make a decision about this tomorrow morning. “At 11 a.m. we will have a crisis meeting, during which it will be considered whether we should stop traffic.” However, GVB is already warning travelers in the Amsterdam region that they should expect delays and cancellations tomorrow in any case. It is also not yet known until what time the ferries in Amsterdam and on the North Sea Canal continue. “That depends on the wind strength, we follow the protocols,” said the spokesperson, who calls on travelers to keep an eye on the website and app.
The Rotterdam public transport company RET is also still considering the storm. “We are in consultation about the measures to be taken,” said a spokesperson this evening.
