The Australian Meteorological Agency warned this Sunday that a tropical storm that is approaching the northeast of the country, the state of Queensland, will continue to “strengthen” until it becomes a cyclone in the next 24 hours.
The Australian agency indicated today that the cyclone, called Kirrily, “will probably intensify” to level 3 (of a total of 5, with this as the strongest) until crossing the coast of Queensland on Wednesday, between the cities of Cairns and Mackay.
This body today urged Australians to prepare for the “severe impact” of the cyclone.
Queensland Governor Steven Miles already recommended the same to citizens on Friday, after an inclement weather season, with much of the state flooded due to the impact of Cyclone Jasper in December.
Jasper brought torrential rain and strong winds that particularly affected the remote Aboriginal community of Wujal Wujal.
Although high-power cyclones are not common in Australia, from time to time one hits the north of the oceanic country, such as the category five Cyclone Yasi, which devastated Queensland in February 2011 and left one dead and extensive damage.
Queensland is not the only state affected by extreme weather in Australia, with the states and territories along with Canberra and Victoria on alert due to high temperatures today and Sydney facing its hottest day so far this year, with the thermometer touching the 40 degrees Celsius.
