North Korea confirmed that it had carried out a test on a ballistic missile launched from a submarine, news released yesterday by both the Seoul and Tokyo authorities. The official news agency KCNA explained that it is a “new type” of missile that would help improve the country’s defense technology and the operational capability of the navy.
Photos published by KCNA showed a small rocket with a presumably small radius. This, coupled with the absence of leader Kim Jong Un at the time of launch, lead experts to believe that this was not a particularly relevant test for North Korea’s missile program. UN resolutions prohibit the Pyongyang regime from testing ballistic missiles that can also carry nuclear warheads.
