There is no peace for the Asian automotive industry in the United States. In recent days Hyundai was sued for alleged exploitation of child labor, but today it is the turn of Nissan: the Japanese company was included in a major investigation due to a series of reports of completely unsolicited side airbag activations. In particular, they ended up under the magnifying glass of the NHTSA 75,000 vehicles designed by Nissan, to be precise the Rogue Select MY 2015 model.
Maxi Nissan investigation
The NHTSA has clearly spoken about involuntary activation of the side airbags, which could cause injury to the occupants of the vehicle or cause a loss of airbag protection. A maxi investigation that follows the measure taken by Nissan and NHTSA themselves a few days ago: the two entities had in fact already last Wednesday invited the owners of approximately 84,000 vehicles not to drive the latter, we are talking about Nissan Sentra 2002-2006, Nissan Pathfinder 2002-2004 and Infiniti QX4 2002-2003, all examples recalled in 2020 but which were never repaired.
Airbag in the sights
The news comes just in the days in which Makoto Uchida, CEO of Nissan, decided to return 30% of his compensation of April after the Japanese antitrust had punished the Japanese brand for having reduced payments to its supplier chain. An announcement that triggered an investigation by a committee, which began some talks with Nissan employees and which subsequently plans to hear from the suppliers themselves. As reported by Automotive News, Makoto Uchida receives a salary of approx 673 million yen per yearthe equivalent of 4.3 million dollars.
