An interesting interview published by Game Informer reveals some background on live action advertisingor with actors in the flesh, which Nintendo did broadcast between the late 90s and early 2000s, also revealing that in one of these a actor in Yoshi costume was about to drown.
All these commercials, started with the great success of the promotional campaign of Super Smash Bros.were conceived and shot by Kathy and Tom Lawrence, a married couple specialized in advertising who had particular luck with this initiative, except for a few moments that touched tragedy.
In one commercial, in particular, Tim himself was inside Yoshi’s costume, discovering at his own expense how this could turn into a death trap if placed in contact with water.
Being immersed in one pool, Tim found himself going to the bottom with the soaked suit, initially unable to escape from the suit. This led to minutes of absolute panic, considering that the Yoshi-suit, built with a spongy material, went from weighing 15 to 90 kg in an instant.
Fortunately, he still managed to escape the trap, with the episode that could forever stain the memory of Nintendo’s mythological live action advertising.
