Nintendo has announced the acquisition of Shiver Entertainment, the development studio that was responsible for the conversion of some triple A games for Nintendo Switch, including Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1. Shiver Entertainment was previously in the hands of Embracer Group, but Mario’s house is purchasing all the company shares to have complete control.
Shiver Entertainment, therefore, will become a subsidiary of Nintendo in all respects. It will however maintain its offices in Miami.
“By welcoming Shiver’s experienced and knowledgeable development team, Nintendo aims to obtain high-level resources for the porting and development of its games,” Nintendo said in a press release.
“In the future, even after joining the Nintendo Group, Shiver will continue to focus on conversion commissions and software development for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch.”
“The acquisition will be completed upon the satisfaction of all customary closing conditions,” Nintendo said, adding that the purchase will have “only a minor effect” on the company’s financial statements for the current fiscal year.
Nintendo’s strategy for acquisitions
It’s been years since Nintendo acquired a development studio. The last one was Next Level Games in 2021, the studio that worked on Luigi’s Mansion 3. The choice is also interesting: Shiver Entertainment is a technical studio, specializing in conversions and support.
Nintendo could use it to direct some conversions of third-party titles to Nintendo Switch 2, practically managing them directly.
Nintendo has always been very cautious with acquisitions and has never indulged in wild spending, as done in recent years by Microsoft, Embracer Group and partly also by Sony. In fact, it’s the only one of the big three hardware makers that hasn’t had to lay off people to keep shareholders happy. Its strategy has been much more careful in this sense, also thanks to the immense success of Nintendo Switch and its intellectual properties, capable of selling millions of copies with each iteration.
