The NASA astronaut Nicole Aunapu Mann Sara the first Native American woman in space when it will be launched on the International Space Station next month, a further record awaits it, in fact it will also be the first female commander of the NASA Commercial Crew program and will lead Space-X Crew 5, scheduled to launch September 29 onwards.
“I think it’s important to communicate this to our community, so that other native kids, if they thought maybe this wasn’t a possibility or realize that some of those barriers that once were are really starting to break down”

Who is Nicole Aunapu Mann?
California-born Nicole Aunapu Mann graduated from the United States Naval Academy and now holds the degree of colonel in the United States Marine Corps. He earned his wings as a Navy aviator and has deployed twice aboard aircraft carriers, flight missions in support of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and has also earned a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford.
Nicole Aunapu Mann was selected by NASA in June 2013 as one of eight members of NASA’s 21st class of astronauts set to focus on space station operations before possible assignments to future missions to the moon, near-Earth asteroids, or eventually Mars.
It will be joined on Crew-5 by Josh Cassada of NASA, as well as Koichi Wakata of the Japanese Space Agency and Roscomos Anna Kikina, and of the four people, only Wakata has already been in space before this flight, but despite that each one has a quantity limited amount of personal items they can carry up into orbit, also because it is expensive to send material into space.
All astronauts will have 1.5 kilograms (3.3 lbs) of personal items they can take with them and Nicole Aunapu Mann has already planned what she will bring:
“I have special gifts for my family, which I cannot say because they are a surprise. I definitely take my wedding rings and have this dream catcher my mom gave me when I was very young. She always stayed with me all the time. “
Mann is also training for the Artemis Program, hoping to be among the people who will walk the surface of the Moon in the next decade.
