QUITO (Reuters) – At least 58 detainees died and 12 were injured in a new conflict at the same prison in Ecuador where a violent riot took place in September, the government said Saturday amid what has been characterized as a gang dispute.
The Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil has become the most violent prison after 119 inmates were murdered at the end of September, the worst incident of prison violence in the country’s history.
The government blamed disputes between drug gangs for leadership and control of territory on prison violence.
The riot on Friday night was triggered by a power vacuum following the release of a gang leader, Guayas provincial governor Pablo Arosemena told a news conference.
“The context of this situation is that there was no gang leader who has a presence in that pavilion because days ago this PPL (private person) had been released because, according to a judge, he was released after serving 60% of the his sentence”, he explained.
“Other pavilions with gangs tried to subdue them, enter, do a total massacre,” added Arosemena.
The violence marked the latest wave of riots in the South American country’s prisons, which are home to some 39,000 inmates. The incidents in February and July of this year in several prisons caused the deaths of 79 and 22 people respectively.
