New luxury family crossover for 60K – Autoblog Advice

What can you buy for 60 grand these days if you want a new luxury family crossover? Team Autoblog will find it out for you!

In the Autoblog Advice section we often discuss used cars, but that is of course absolutely not a condition! We are also ready to assist with excellent advice for new cars. Whether it concerns a new lease car, business car or private car. Because yes, there are also plenty of people who still just buy a new car.

Ronald is such a person. He now has a young Kia Proceed and before that had a Volvo V40 (and before that a Volkswagen Up!). He is now looking at the next car and it could be a size bigger than the current one. What is called: a few sizes even!

We are looking for a luxury family crossover!

A large luxury family crossover must now take its place. In the meantime, Ronald and his partner have a daughter. As you know, the children themselves are not that big, but you suddenly have to take a lot of extra equipment with you. You can also treat yourself to a large, comfortable car, right? Yes, you will arrive at your destination in a 20 year Hyundai Atos, but a little comfort, luxury, performance and safety are very nice.

Ronald would like a more spacious car, a luxury family crossover. The rear legroom in the Kia Ceed is not great. The loading space is also a bit on the small side. The next car should be considerably more spacious. It is important to know that luxury and equipment are more important than horsepower and Nm. A PHEV is not excluded, because Ronald has a charging station in the driveway.

You can see the wishes and requirements for a luxury family crossover in the table below:

Current/previous cars: Kia Proceed (2020), Volvo V40, VW Up
Buy / lease: Buy or Private Lease
Budget: €60,000
Annual mileage: 20-25K
Fuel preference: Petrol, (Plug-in) Hybrid or EV
Reason for purchasing another car: End of lease contract and looking for a larger replacement
Family composition: Partner and daughter (2 years)
Preferred brands/models: Volvo, VAG (preference for Skoda or Seat/Cupra), Kia – combi or SUV
No-go brands/models: BMW

How do we get the figures?

General tip: go for the PHEV

In this case we always recommend the PHEV. Firstly, you have the half rate for plug-in hybrids. Now this is finite, but the PHEV is still interesting. They are often luxuriously equipped and you pay little BPM. So you get the most car possible for your money. In contrast to the PHEVs of 10 years ago, you can drive quite a lot electrically and therefore reduce consumption. In addition, the PHEV takes up less space in a large luxury family crossover. Finally, a crossover is less dynamic, so the extra weight is less annoying. In addition, you can park in many more places. Also tasty. Tip: just have an hour's lunch at a fast charger during winter sports. The people behind you will thank you.

Kia Sorento 1.6 T-GDI PHEV Hybrid 4WD Edition (MQ4)

€60,995

What is it?

Just about the largest Kia you can get in our country. The Sorento has been drastically improved per generation. This is now the fourth generation. Just like every Kia Sorento, this one also looks cool. The interior is more important, more than it is at the level of the competition (which was sometimes different in the past). At the moment, only the overcomplete Edition is on the price lists. You might be able to score a nice deal with that. Some markets already have the facelift model (which looks a bit like the EV9), which we won't get until June 2024. So maybe you can take advantage of that. Or you wait a few weeks.

How does it drive?

It is a relaxed bike and you should drive it that way to fully enjoy it. The drivetrain is most optimal at part load. When you start planking, you notice that there is not much more power, but that the consumption skyrockets. Dynamically, it's not quite the automotive equivalent of a ballerina either. But hey, it's totally fine for commuting and occasionally driving long distances. You can drive approximately 50 km electrically on the battery, so that in itself will make a difference if you can charge regularly.

Cost Kia Sorento

  • Consumption: 1 to 20.79
  • Fuel costs: €228
  • Weight: 1,758 kg
  • Motor vehicle tax: €54
  • Insurance: €110
  • total monthly costs

Maintenance forecast

We could be very brief about this, but of course we are not. We'll talk for a while again, of course. The Kia Sorento has a seven-year manufacturer's warranty. That they give that on a Kia Picanto: logical. But also on a Sorento, which is a large, luxurious, heavy and complicated crossover. However, this does not mean that you will not incur any maintenance costs: you will continue to have brakes, tires, servicing and the like, but you will be spared any surprises.

Depreciation forecast

Well, put it away. Big Kias are depreciation monsters. Now large, young and expensive cars are always very sensitive to depreciation. Given the warranty conditions of the car, it is not a bad idea to simply continue driving it for longer. Three-year-old copies can now be found from 37-40 grand. So after three years and 100,000 km of driving, your 61,000 euro car is still worth 32-35 grand.

Mazda CX-60 e-SkyActiv PHEV Exclusive Line (KH)

€59,240

luxury family crossover

What is it?

Another car that is available-not available. Mazda has removed the car from the configurator (usually a sign that it is no longer available), but you can still get a lot of them from stock. There are still plenty of them at the dealers. A funny detail is that you can get a very complete CX-5 or this CX-60 for 60 grand. That's mainly due to the high BPM of the CX-5, so this CX-60 is a much better deal.

How does it drive?

They are great cars. They are rear-wheel drives (engine in length, drive primarily to the rear, also to the front via an intermediate gearbox). This means a fabulous balance, just like a Jaguar E-Pace, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC also have. The handling is really excellent. The engines together produce 337 hp, but it is not an acceleration monster. It does feel smoother than the Kia (because the CX60 is too). View the driving test below:

Costs Mazda CX-60

  • Consumption: 1 in 18.9
  • Fuel costs: €251
  • Weight: 1,970 kg
  • Motor vehicle tax: €63
  • Insurance: €100
  • Total monthly costs:

Maintenance forecast

Just like with the Kia, you don't have to worry here. Of course, regular maintenance is part of it, but Mazda also comes with an extended warranty period: 6 years or 150,000 km. With PHEVs you don't have to worry about the brakes (they brake on the engine), so it's not that bad. Depending on your driving style, tires may be an expense.

Depreciation forecast

Expensive cars depreciate, but compared to the Kia, we think that the Mazda will depreciate slightly less. There are not enough old models to prove this yet, as the CX-60 is still a fresh model. Young used copies are for sale from 45 grand at the moment. They are about two years old and have less than half a ton on them.

Anti-yolo: Seat Tarraco FR Business e-Hybrid (KN2)

€46,995

luxury family crossover

What is it?

Look, you don't always have to spend the money. If you want a manufacturer's warranty and lots of space in a crossover, you can get it for much less. The Tarraco is a small hit in this version. For 45 Millie you get a huge car, a neat PHEV drivetrain and a sporty version with quite a bit of equipment. The car looks fresh from the outside, but in the interior you can see where the lower price comes from. It's not really disturbing at all. It's very orderly, everyone.

How does it drive?

Despite Seat's 'FR' badge and Auto Emocion slogan, don't expect miracles in terms of dynamics. It is not a sporty top model. Nah, this is the well-known MQB car with the well-known PHEV drivetrain. That means a great companion to travel with. The performance is excellent, you can drive for a while on the battery alone and it turns neatly.

Costs Seat Tarraco

Consumption: 1 to 22.08
Fuel costs: €215
Weight 1,768 kg
Motor vehicle tax: €54
Insurance: €95
Total monthly costs:

Maintenance forecast

Of course, just like the other cars, you also have a factory warranty here. In the case of Seat this is 4 years. Not bad in itself, but if you can also get 6 or 7 years, it might be a bit disappointing. The maximum mileage is 100,000 km. Also considerably less. Good to know, the battery comes with an 8-year and 160,000 km warranty from Seat.

Depreciation forecast

Large Seats depreciate. Relatively speaking, it's not too bad. You don't start depreciating at 60 grand, but at 44. A three-year old Taracco (with half a ton on the clock) now costs 37-40 grand, so you will still get 32 in return after three years. That's actually quite neat and makes the Tarraco extra interesting.

YOLO: Volvo XC90 T8 R-Design

€56,900
2020
60,000 km

What is it?

The ultimate luxury family crossover. If you want a lot of space with a lot of luxury, then this is a winner. Especially if it has to be a PHEV. Volvo is very good at it. Even though the XC90 is a full size larger than the XC60, the extra weight is not that bad (only 100 kg). So always go for the XC90. You can tell from the interior that this is a class higher. The chairs are epically good, the finish is particularly beautiful and the materials used are very high-quality. Special mention to the designers, because this car still looks fresh and beautiful, even though it dates from 2015. Well done.

luxury family crossover

How does it drive?

Despite the available horsepower (455 units!) and R-Design badge, it is by no means a sporty car. The four-cylinder fires all its power (320 hp) to the front axle, the rest goes to the rear axle. The performance is impressive in a straight line, you can reach the limiter in no time. But it is especially capable of steering. Go all out for comfort and look for one with air suspension (there are plenty of them available). In any case, an Inscription suits the car better than an R-Design, but unfortunately we could not find it in the budget at the time of writing.

Cost Volvo XC90

  • Consumption: 1 to 13.09
  • Fuel costs: €362
  • Weight: 2,197 kg
  • Motor vehicle tax: €143
  • Insurance: €150
  • total monthly costs

Maintenance forecast

The Volvo XC90 does not have a perfect image when it comes to reliability. This is mainly due to the early copies. The XC90 was then a brand new car with new technologies, something that was accompanied by some teething problems. On the Volvo Selekt occasions you get a 2-year warranty, regardless of the number of kilometers!

Depreciation forecast

The advantage is that you have already had most of the depreciation. To be completely honest, we had hoped to find a slightly fresher example for 60 grand. We just really wanted one with a Volvo Selekt warranty and those are more expensive. Even though it is a used car, it will depreciate significantly.

Conclusion new luxury family crossover

All four meet the requirements, one slightly better than the other. As a foodie we would go for the Mazda CX-60. This has excellent performance, the best driving characteristics and a beautiful interior. The Seat is a great offer, even though it's hard to see where the money comes from. If you want to continue driving the car for a long time, Kia's warranty period is again very interesting. As a total package, the Mazda is the most successful.
