Not one but two were the bush fires registered this Sunday in plots of the Murcian neighborhood of La Purísima-Barriomar. The first was declared after 11 a.m. on land located near where the weekly market in the area is held and which is included in the so-called ZM-Br1 partial plan, according to the president of the Municipal Board, Juan José García. It affected a total area of 2,000 square meters. The second fire started shortly before 8 in the afternoon in the surroundings of the Barriomar 74 public school, near the Segura river and on land that, in principle, should be included in the second phase of the future West Metropolitan Park, as he adds. In this case, the flames burned 800 square meters of brush, confirmed sources from the Fire Department.
The representatives of the Neighborhood Association of Barriomar have once again denounced, as a result of these incidents, the situation of “negligence” in which various plots located in this peripheral neighborhood are found, which repeatedly gives rise to this type of events. “Every year we have fires of this type and this time they have arrived earlier, in the middle of winter,” explained the vice president of the neighborhood entity, José Ángel Carcelén. An example of this is the fire registered in the summer of 2021 in the patio of a squatted house on Avenida Ciudad de Almería and which spread like wildfire, through the orchards in the back, until it stopped at the gates of the chemical plant of Destilerías Muñoz Gálvez.
Faced with this situation, from the association they not only urge the bidding for the works of the new green area, promised for this spring and that would allow an area taken over by weeds to be valued, but also urge that it be carried out carried out a cleaning, on a recurring basis, of all the land that is in a situation of abandonment in this neighbourhood, whether owned by the municipality or private individuals, before which a “subsidiary execution” must be imposed by the City Council. «It is true that last year action was taken on a handful of plots in response to our demands, but it is not enough; In addition, it is not enough to clean them up, they must be fenced off when possible,” adds Carcelén, stressing that these fires occur because there are areas where people gather to smoke or “bonfires” are lit. “This time nothing has happened, but we may encounter a misfortune,” he concluded.
For his part, the villager attributed the difficulties in undertaking these cleaning tasks to the fact that “a good part of these lands are in the hands of Sareb.” “In addition, the development of the aforementioned partial plan, submitted to public information in 2020 and which is still stuck, would help to clean up the area,” adds García. From the City Council, to questions from LA VERDAD, it has not been specified if an action plan is being prepared for plots
