According to a study by the University of Essen, long-Covid symptoms mostly have psychological and psychosomatic reasons. Vaccinations as a trigger are very unlikely.
Essen – In medicine, one speaks of long covid when patients continue to suffer from symptoms for a longer period of time after surviving a corona infection. The data obtained so far on Long Covid is not yet clear.
One result of a study by Mainz University Medicine published in December 2021 is that around 40 percent of those infected with corona still have symptoms more than six months later. The Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) informs that an estimated two to 20 percent of adults suffering from corona still suffer from symptoms after twelve or more weeks. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), ten to 20 percent of people still feel the effects of the disease months later.
Long Covid study by the University of Essen: The severity of the course of the disease is irrelevant
In an interview with the world Christoph Kleinschnitz, Head of the Neurological Clinic at Essen University Hospital, is now reporting on the results of his long-Covid study. This is based on data from over 500 patients who presented to the clinic’s long-Covid outpatient clinic. Over 3,000 acute Covid patients were treated at the Essen University Hospital itself
According to Kleinschnitz, ten to 15 percent of all infections with the corona virus lead to long-Covid symptoms. According to his impression, the probability that the occurrence of long-term consequences depends on the severity of the course of the disease is not very high. However, he assumes that this probability is a little lower in a mild course.
According to Kleinschnitz, the study shows that the most common symptom is pathological tiredness, also known as fatigue. 60 percent of long-Covid patients are affected. Concentration and memory disorders follow with about 40 percent. 20 to 30 percent of patients suffer from problems finding words. Dizziness and headaches are also common. Rarely do the affected people report insomnia, inner restlessness, anxiety and depressive moods. On the other hand, less than ten percent are affected by a longer-lasting disturbance of the sense of smell.
Long Covid study by the University of Essen: 90 percent without organic abnormalities
Kleinschnitz says of the causes of Long Covid world: “Our data show no organic abnormalities whatsoever in 90 percent of the cases. Therefore I assume that the cause for most symptoms is to be found in the psychological and psychosomatic area. It is important for him to emphasize that these people are actually suffering and that the symptoms are real and not imagined. This is where I see the most important starting point for the treatment of patients.
However, he cannot completely rule out whether inflammation and immune phenomena or microthrombosis also play a role in Long Covid. But he doesn’t think that’s very plausible.
Long Covid study by the University of Essen: Vaccination as a trigger is very unlikely
Kleinschnitz considers a connection between Long Covid and dementia to be unlikely, and Sars-CoV-2 viruses could not be detected in the nerve water of a single patient. However, he does not want to completely rule out a connection at the present time. Should this be the case, however, he does not expect a mass phenomenon.
Kleinschnitz does not see vaccinations as a trigger for Long Covid. “But studies have shown that vaccinations reduce the likelihood of long covid,” he says. However, there are tragic individual cases, such as sinus vein thrombosis, acute paralysis and severe encephalitis. “The great social benefit of the corona vaccinations has outweighed these rare side effects many times over,” Kleinschnitz continued.
