Paris.- Days after indefinitely suspending all plans for the production and acquisition of content in Russia, Netflix announced this Sunday that it will implement an even more drastic measure in the country: completely withdraw its streaming service, according to various international media.
“Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia,” the platform said in a press release. This measure is a response to the growth of violence in Ukraine, after the invasion of the Russians.
Earlier this week, Netflix began punishing Russia by announcing that it would not comply with laws that require it to stream 20 free state-owned streaming channels on its service, following in the footsteps of tech companies like YouTube, Meta and Twitter, which they have blocked advertising revenue from Russian channels such as RT and Sputnik.
Meanwhile, all major Hollywood studios announced last week that they would not release their upcoming films in Russian theaters, including Warner Bros.’s The Batman and Disney/Pixar’s Turning Red.
Tiktok joins the boycott

“In light of Russia’s new ‘fake news’ law, we have no choice but to suspend live streaming and new content from our video service while we review the security implications of this law,” the company said in a statement. Twitter, although it clarified that its messaging service will not be affected.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed into law a law that provides prison sentences of up to 15 years for those who publish “fake news” about the Russian military, as he advances a war in Ukraine.
