Kaskistentie There has been a rail traffic accident in Närpiö where a freight train and a passenger car collided. Two people in the car were injured in the accident.

The accident happened at the level crossing between Seinäjoki and Kaskisten. The on-duty fire marshal of the Ostrobothnia Rescue Service Teemu Jumpponen according to the freight train was on its way from the direction of Kaskisten towards Seinäjoki when it collided with a passenger car. The train was not in cargo at the time of the accident.

After noticing the collision, the train driver applied the emergency brake. The passenger car got caught in the front of the train and dragged along with the train for about 200 meters, says Jumpponen.

In addition to the driver, there was also another person in the car. Both suffered minor injuries and were taken for examination. The train driver was not injured in the accident.

The rescue service was alerted after 2 pm on Wednesday. According to information from the rescue service, there have been six units on the scene. According to Jumpponen, the last units left the scene after 4 p.m. The rescue operations lasted about an hour and a half.

Emergency services helped two car passengers out of the car.

“They weren’t actually stuck in the car, but they couldn’t open the doors,” Jumpponen describes.

According to the fire chief, the level crossing’s safety and signaling devices were working correctly at the time of the accident. He did not assess the cause of the accident. According to him, the weather has been sunny and windy.

The passenger car was badly damaged in the accident. The bow of the train was also damaged. According to the fire chief, there was damage especially to the stairs of the train, where the train driver usually gets up to his workplace on the train.

According to the fire chief, even after 4 p.m., a more detailed assessment was made on the spot about the condition of the train and whether the same driver is able to drive the locomotive. That’s why the train stood still on the other side of the level crossing, explains Jumpponen.
