Laughing is something very natural and everyday, but transferring that gesture to the written messages we send on a daily basis may not be so easy. The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) has surprised many when announcing what is the correct way to express laughter in Spanish.
The normal thing for many is to write this expression using ‘hahaha’, a very common way on social networks such as Whatsapp, X, or Facebook. However, the RAE has established that this form is not correct according to the norms of the Spanish language and has therefore proposed a new way of expressing laughter.
Thus, for the RAE, the proper expression should be “ha ha ha”, with commas interspersed between each ‘ha’. According to the organization, this rule respects the rules of accentuation and avoids the creation of a compound word.
And when we write ‘hahaha’ all together, what we do is create a plain word that, according to the rules, should have an accent, since it falls on the penultimate syllable. When using the expression ‘ha, ha, ha’, a compound word is not createdbut a series of individual expressions of laughter that eliminate the need for accentuation.
Furthermore, ‘hahaha’ is not spelled correctly either, an expression that comes from English where the ‘h’ does sound unlike in Spanish, where this letter does not represent any sound. In the same way, the RAE clarifies that the variations of ‘hahaha’ such as ‘hehehe’, ‘jojojo’, or ‘jijiji’, must also be subject to the same rulesso your expression, in reality, should be ‘ho, ho, ho’ ‘he, hee, hee’ or ‘hee, hee, hee’.
The only case in which the RAE accepts that they go together and with an accent is when its expression is equivalent to that of a nounas is the case of the expression “A lot of jijijí and little work”, where the ‘jijijí’ is equivalent to a name, so everything is written together and with an accent in the last syllable.
