“More oxygen, less ingenuity”, the citizen cry for the salty lagoon coinciding with World Environment Day
A symbolic collection of algae and ova has served this Sunday, World Environment Day, to demand joint action from the administrations for the recovery of the Mar Menor. A group of citizens from various associations defending the lagoon carried out the protest on different shores, from Castillicos beach, in La Ribera, where the dead fish appeared for the last time due to the anoxia of the water, to La Concha beach , in Los Alcázares, in Playa Honda, La Manga and Los Urrutias.
“We want administrations to stop facing each other and blaming each other. Let them work to carry out solutions”, commented Francisco Villaescusa, a neighbor and member of one of the associations that have demonstrated.

With white overalls, like the ones used by operators hired by the Community and the municipalities to clean the beaches, the residents collected part of the algae that proliferates due to the excess of nutrients and fertilizers.
The activists denounce that, upon learning of their act of protest, the San Javier City Council has ordered the removal of the algae first thing in the morning. “It is going to be a catastrophic summer, with a drop in reservations and fewer tourists. Let’s see if they realize it, “commented Villaescusa.
At the foot of the beach they also showed the result of an analysis carried out on a sample of water collected next to the Socaire sailing school. “It has nitrates and phosphates. It is an urban spill, ”said Caroline Riviere, from the association Por un Mar Menor Vivo.
