Naturgy has signed a multiannual agreement with the American company Crowley to guarantee regular liquefied natural gas supply (LNG) to Puerto Rico. The agreement will allow the transport of LNG to the operational plant of the Spanish company in Peñuelas, ensuring a stable energy source in a context of political changes in the US, with the administration of Donald Trump promoting national energy development.
As part of this contract, the American Energy ship, owned by the American company, will be the first to transport LNG from the US heart to Puerto Rico. With a capacity of 130,400 cubic meters per trip, this boat will guarantee a continuous flow of gas to the island, contributing to its energy transition and electrical stability.
The American Energy operates under the Authorization Law of the US Coast Guard of 1996 and has the CAP 1 certification, the maximum safety rating of the ship, ensuring compliance with all current regulations.
The governor of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González-Colón, highlighted the relevance of this milestone: “The entry into the service of the American Energy marks a historical step for the stability of the fuel supply in Puerto Rico. This agreement strengthens our electricity grid and guarantees reliable access to energy at a key moment for our economy and development.”
With 274 meters of length, the American Energy ship reinforces the commitment of more than 70 years of Crowley with Puerto Rico. The company also operates the Isla Grande Load Terminal in San Juan and manages two ships propelled by LNG, in addition to offering logistics services. GNL delivery made by the American Energy will allow to supply 80,000 homes for a year. In addition, the LNG represents a more sustainable alternative to diesel, with lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Tom Crowley, president and executive director of Crowley Corporation, stressed the importance of the agreement: “We are proud to expand the availability of LNG in Puerto Rico with Naturgy. In a context of growing demand and new energy policies in the US, this contract demonstrates the capacity of the private sector to provide efficient and safe solutions.”
For his part, Jon Ganuza, general manager of Naturgy wholesale supply and markets, emphasized the relevance of the pact: “This contract reinforces our position in the global LNG market and provides Puerto Rico a source of stable and competitive energy at a critical moment.”
This new agreement between Naturgy and Crowley consolidates the supply of LNG to Puerto Rico, ensuring energy stability and reinforcing the island’s infrastructure.
The Spanish company thus increases American gas purchases while preparing to reduce historical contracts due to the fall of consumption provided in Spain. The company expects long -term volumes to fall to 170 TWH in 2027 from the 210 twhh of 2024.
