NATO warns Moscow: “If Putin uses nuclear weapons, serious consequences”
“Any use of nuclear weapons will have serious consequences for Russia.” This is the warning launched by the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, in response to the announcements of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an interview with the American broadcaster NBC, the leader of the Atlantic Alliance also stated that “any deliberate attack against NATO’s critical infrastructure will receive a firm and compact response”, adding that evoking the use of nuclear weapons is “dangerous”.
Stoltenberg also commented on the unilateral annexation of four Ukrainian regions to the Russian Federation, formalized last Friday. “The best way to counter the proclaimed annexation of parts of Ukraine to Russia is to continue to support the government of Kiev,” said Stoltenberg, according to whom “the conquest of the city of Lyman by the forces of Kiev” shows that the Ukrainians they are making progress and are capable of repelling Russian forces ”.
The former Norwegian prime minister also returned to the “accelerated” request for NATO membership, announced by Kiev immediately after the annexation. According to the secretary general of the Alliance, “any decision regarding Ukraine’s accession to NATO must be taken by all members”.
