The beginning of 2022 could not be better for Nairo Quintana. The triumphs in the Tour de la Provence and the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes ratify him as the most successful cyclist in Colombia.
This Tuesday, with the calm that comes with success, the boyacense cyclist offered a videoconference attended by EL TIEMPO. His recovery from covid-19, the challenges of 2022, the absence in the Giro d’Italia and the lack of Egan Bernal were the most commented topics.
Nair’s words
Regarding his absence in the Giro, a race that he already won in 2014 and in which he was second in 2017, Nairo regretted not being able to race this year, but said that the team’s goals came first.
“We still have years and opportunities to go. We decided to fight for those points in races parallel to the Giro d’Italia and to be able to do the Tour de France well and a good Vuelta a España,” he said.
Questioned about the situation of Egan Bernal, and his almost certain absence in the 2022 competitions, Quintana said that the most important thing is the athlete’s health.
“The only thing that can be hoped is that Egan can recover well,” expressed at first.
After highlighting the great moment of other beetles, Quintana stated: “We have to pray a lot for Egan, so that his recovery goes well.
Later, questioned about the circumstances in which Bernal’s accident occurred, and Froome’s proposal, an Ineos cyclist, to ban time trial bicycles, the boyacense stated: “Time cycles cannot be prohibited, they cannot be changed. It is as if Formula 1 cars were prohibited”.
“Everyone decides where they train”he concluded.
Nairo Quintana will not be at Faun Ardeche next weekend.
“We have made the decision with the team to cancel this race because we want to do a good training cycle to maintain the form in which I am”he argued.
The boyacense will return to activity with the Paris Nice, which begins on March 6.
