The main lawyer for Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was overthrown by the army in February, announced on Friday that he had received an order from the military junta to no longer speak to journalists, diplomats or international organizations.
“Well, they shut my mouth with 144,” posted lawyer Khin Maung Zaw on his Facebook page, in reference to the criminal code article number used for the order.
He also published photos of the order, in which authorities point out that he spoke to the press.
“This communication disturbs or harms some people who are acting in accordance with the law and may cause public unrest,” the order states.
“As of October 14, lawyer Khin Maung Zaw is prohibited from communicating, meeting and speaking with local and foreign media, foreign diplomats, international organizations… representatives of foreign governments and other organizations from abroad, in a manner direct or indirect”, completes the text.
The order came after the lawyer explained the experience of ousted president Win Myint, who reportedly rejected the military’s offer to step down during the Feb. 1 coup.
Leader Aung San Suu Kyi faces several charges that could result in long prison terms.
The press cannot follow the trials and lawyers represent a crucial source of information about the hearings.
The February coup sparked a widespread protest movement that the military repressed with violence, leaving a toll of nearly 1,200 civilians dead.
