Talking about “My beautiful genius” is to remember one of the iconic television series. Released in 1965, the fiction starred Barbara Eden, Larry Hagman and Bill Dailyinterpreters who, with their share of humor and a good script behind, managed to earn a place in popular culture.
The success of “I dream of Jeannie” was such that it managed to be on the air for five seasons, but it also managed to release two movies for television, which ended the plot between Jeannie and Anthony Nelson. Being a famous series, there are several secrets and anecdotes that she keeps, one of them takes us to the suit that the genius wore.
Why was the “I Dream of Jeannie” costume controversial?
In 2015, when “My beautiful genius” celebrated the 50th anniversary of its premiere, Bárbara Eden spoke with the Today program, and recounted several passages from the show. Here, she shared how NBC had a tense moment deciding what to do with her wardrobe, but specifically showing off her belly button.
“Actually, at the beginning we didn’t have any problem with the dressing room, nobody said anything about him. It all starts when producer George Schlatter wanted to “show my belly button” on national television. He commented that NBC executives got a little tense. I remember he told us something like ‘never in my life have I seen so many men in suits gathered in one room discussing someone else’s body’. From that moment on, they became very strict about what we showed. They did not want us to forget that we were a family series, “explained the actress.
But the suit that Barbara Eden wore was not only a problem for NBC, it was also for the production, after the interpreter confirmed that he was pregnant in the first season of the series. His wardrobe had to be modified more than once.
“I remember that, when they confirmed that the program would go on the air, I found out that I was pregnant. I called Sidney Sheldon (creator of the series) to tell him and he joked ‘I’m sure you’ll tell me you’re going to have a baby’ and I said yes. This is how they modify the suit. If you see, I have several fabrics covering my stomach”, shared Eden in the documentary “I dream of Jeannie: out of the bottle”.
After announcing her pregnancy to Sheldon and the rest of the cast, the actress thought it was a matter of time to be replaced, but things would not be like that. The director of the show wanted to continue with her in the leading role.
“After the news, I told Bárbara that I was not going to replace her. So the next day we had a meeting to see how to record. In the first chapters, the camera games were important”, mentioned Sidney Sheldon in the documentary.
