The president of the Community participates in Sierra Espuña in the last act of celebration of the International Day of Forests
The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, put in value this Monday the management of the forests of the Region of Murcia, and stressed that “in the last four years we have invested
18 million euros in restoring, protecting and reforesting more than 6,000 hectares of land, with the benefits that this brings in the fight against desertification, erosion and fires ”. In addition, he stressed that in that period more than 240 kilometers of forest roads have been conditioned.
López Miras participated in
Sierra Espuña in the last act of celebration of the International Day of Forests, whose Spanish headquarters in 2021 was the Region of Murcia. These events began in Caravaca de la Cruz on October 2, and ended on October 4, coinciding both with the feast of San Francisco de Asís, patron of forestry professionals, and with the 130th anniversary of the afforestation of Sierra Espuña. .
Precisely the work of the environmental agents and forestry brigades of the Region was praised by the head of the regional Executive, who valued “the great work they always do to take care of the natural environment of the Region of Murcia, and that serves to protect us all” .
“The Region of Murcia is a community with a great natural heritage, which we have to defend, and of which we should be proud,” said López Miras, who recalled that this environmental wealth currently includes a natural reserve, seven regional parks, seven protected landscapes , three natural monuments and 98 wetlands, as well as almost a hundred Places of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA).
The autonomic person in charge also affirmed that “the Region of Murcia takes more than a century
restoring and reforesting our forests“And gave as an example the work of the Cartagena engineer Ricardo Cordoniú,” who began the reforestation of Sierra Espuña by appealing to the conscience of the whole of society, and who managed to make this regional park today one of the green lungs of the Region of Murcia and from all over Spain ».
López Miras appealed “to that same environmental responsibility and to that sustainable commitment to our natural surroundings” for the protection of the Mar Menor. “You have to make decisions now, you have to take steps forward, and if there is someone who is not willing to do so, leave us to those of us who know what to do and want to take action,” he said.
The events to celebrate the International Day of Forests 2021 were co-organized by the Community, through the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment; by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and by the Platform Juntos por los Bosques.
