According to the Budget Minister, the government will only be aware of the cost of repairing the damage when the water level drops.
The Minister of Planning and Budget, Simone Tebetsaid this Monday (May 6, 2024) that the mayors of municipalities hit by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul still do not know the “dimension” of expenses to repair the damage caused by the storms, which have hit the State since April 28th.
“It is only when this water subsides that, regrettably, we will see the immense extent of the cost, damage and national tragedy that is the situation in Rio Grande do Sul”Tebet told journalists at Palácio do Planalto, after the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) sign a PDL (Project Legislative Decree) to speed up the federal government’s aid measures for Rio Grande do Sul, which has been experiencing heavy rains and floods since April 28.
The project authorizes the federal government to exclude from the fiscal target expenses incurred through extraordinary credit to help the State recover from the climate disaster. The document also calls for the declaration of a state of public calamity until December 31st.
The government also wants to release around R$1.06 billion in parliamentary amendments to the state’s city halls.
The PT administration has already identified R$580 million, authorized on Friday (May 3) and released by the ministries. In addition to this amount, the government and the Rio Grande do Sul bench sent a proposed amendment to the LDO (Budget Guidelines Law) of 2024 to allow advance payment of “special transfers” worth R$480 million for the affected municipalities.
